CLUB HISTORY

The founders of the Sycamore Island Club created a most unique institution -- a club owned and operated by its members through volunteer effort, in a democratic manner and completely independent. They developed a set of club bylaws that, though revised, are still with us today. They also scrupulously obeyed the legal corporate requirement of monthly meetings, and from early on, meticulously maintained the minutes of them. These were published and distributed with the Sycamore Islander, the club's monthly newsletter. From a historical perspective, these Islanders and meeting minutes have become the club's single richest glimpse into the day-to-day workings of its past.

The Sycamore Island Club's physical archives are maintained by The Historical Society of Washington, DC. It is beyond the resources of the club to publish all they contain in digital format. However, publishing the meeting minutes in their entirety is an on-going project for the benefit and convenience of the membership.
